Sony sued over Blu-ray
California company alleges patent infringements in PS3 maker's latest optical disc technology.

Given its global position as an electronics giant, Sony is quite familiar with patent law. The company is also quite familiar with the potential penalties for running afoul of patent law, as evidenced by the $97 million in damages and interest it had to pay Immersion Corporation in a dispute over the rumble functions in Dual Shock controllers.

While the two companies have since patched things up, Sony opted to leave rumble by the wayside when it was designing the PlayStation 3's motion-sensing Sixaxis controller. The electronics giant couldn't avoid patent headaches entirely, however, as Irvine, California-based Target Technology Company filed suit earlier this month, seeking damages for alleged patent violations relating to the Blu-ray technology used in the system.

The suit, which names Sony Computer Entertainment America, Sony Pictures, and Sony DADC, claims that products marketed under the Blu-ray name infringe on a patent it owns for reflective layer materials in optical discs. The patent addresses what Target called a need for specific types of silver-based alloys with the advantages (but not the price) of gold. According to the patent, the alloys are also more resistant to corrosion than pure silver. The patent was filed in April of 2004 and granted in March of 2006.

Target is seeking a permanent injunction preventing Sony from violating its patent rights in the future, as well as damages with interest, multiplied due to what it characterizes as deliberate and willful infringement.

Neither Sony representatives nor Target attorneys had returned GameSpot's requests for comment as of press time.

Sony always has to do this with their consoles. I wonder if they will have to stop selling ps3's because of this or keep games from coming out. That would suck for Sony since they aren't making any profit in the game division right now.

Patent Suits can be ludacris attempts to make easy money or publicity.... Not knowing the tech. specs for each system I cant say what this is.... Either way between this and the rumble controversy (will they face more when they release a rumble enabled controller this fall?) they certainly arent helping themselve...

PS3 wont bankrupt Sony.... they could sale 0 and it wouldnt do that..... they are bleeding out but far from bankrupt...

It could bankrupt the game division though. Which is where Microsoft would come in and buy that. Though that could be a bad thing for the market. Though it could help the market where Microsoft wouldn't have to worry about competition as much when it comes to hardcore gamers and can work on the system without thinking what the competition will put out.

That right there wouldn't happen. SCE wouldn't sell out to Microsoft under any circumstances. If SCE were to have a falling out, Sony would most likely just pull the plug on the program. Or try to figure ways to rebuild it. Although SCE has dug themselves into a pretty deep hole anyways, given all the issues they've had since 2003. Starting the PS3 R&D Cycle so late into the season, and they inadvertantly gave Microsoft and Nintendo a 2 year headstart on R&D. Morons. If you look at the PS3 and its inner workings, you can tell a lot of the systematic designs were not entirely thought out. The system is powerful but hard to work with. The 360 is powerful and easy to work with. Hmmm - gee I wonder. At anyrate. That is irrelevant to the topic. Sony was sued over Blu-Ray. It doesn't necessarily deal directly with the PS3. Don't forget - Sony offers standard Blue-Ray Disc Players also. So this incident is going to hurt "all" of Sony, not just the SCE. Meh - Leave it to Sony to take shortcuts.
