View Full Version : My new 180GB PS3
Yup you heard right...I got the idea from just learning about SATA drives,I put 2 and 2 together and made my new 180GB for two reasons..
1)My memory was running out fast
2)I got bored :P
but it works fine and am happy with the results:gr8:
PS:it says 155GB because I partioned it for linux :)

PS:this is NOT a mod and in no way does this void my warranty,its just a bigger version of the 2.5'' HDD

Nice....if i had the funds to buy a new HDD to put in it i would do it too.
But uhm how did you preserve your gamesaves and such?

moved them to my comp with a memory stick and then moved them back,....

Well the PS3 was built so that its HDD could be upgradeable,just as simple as opening up the side panel and sticking in the SATA cable...The HDD was taken from my PC,i replaced it with a 320GB IDE drive that was an ex-external HDD,that is where my 180GB PS3 HDD is siting now,in my old 320GB external enclosure!
My main drive to do it was that I have tons of HD movies on my PC...but I wanna watch them on my tv so I transfer them to my PS3..,.I have tried streaming but the load times and frame rate are terrible on compressed MP4 HD files..60gb doesn't cut it for HD movies...not even compressed ones...so now i can store games,movies,music and pictures without the worry of using up my memory :D

Now that pretty cool. But, if it not original equipment, it's a mod. I just have a butt load of stuff on my PC and stream it threw the 360.

Looks like a mod...buts its not..if you upgrade you PC memory is that a mod?I dont think so,sony let you upgrade the memory on the ps3,thats why they give you access to the HDD....if it was 2.5" HDD it wouldn't look like a mod but it does the same thing!

it's a mod because you 'modified' the original ps3. it's not illegal, but a mod none the less. :D

if you use an external HDD you can only use it for music movies and photos...but with a desktop HDD(you can buy laptop HDD's they fit right in and it doesnt look as messy...they just cost too much)but if you do it the SATA way like me you can also use it for games and linux!

the ps3 doesn't use a brand name HDD like the 360..so if its sata it works no matter what the original HDD size!

nah, i meant like the 20 gig version doesnt have all of the features/capabilites as the 60 giger..

They dont make 20 gigers anymore,there removing the 60 gig now and putting in a 40 gig with the same capabilities as the 60 gig for 100 cheaper,already in effect here.so soon you will only have a choice of 80 gig or 40 gig
