Sony Sizes Up Xbox Live

By Tom Ivan Print | Send to a friend | Email the editor

Eric Lempel, director of PlayStation Network operations, has said that the company may one day charge for PSN. He also feels PSN and Xbox Live are currently operating on a roughly level playing field and reveals improvements to the service currently in development. More within...
Speaking to Geoff Keighley on the latest edition of Gametrailers’ Bonus Round, Lempel said that there was little to differentiate Xbox Live and PSN offerings to consumers bar the price. However, Lempel indicated that as the service grows, PSN may not always be available for free.

“Microsoft had a year jump on us for the launch and essentially we’re offering a lot of the same stuff. I don’t think there’s a big difference in exactly what we’re offering when it comes down to the nuts and bolts of what’s actually there for the consumer… We’re not charging money for our service. That’s a key differentiating factor.”

However, that could be open to change in the future.

“Right now that’s our model. In time anything can change but right now we’re happy with it.”

Lempel did concede that Sony was working to replicate a number of Xbox Live’s most successful features including cross-game invites, the ability to access the cross-media bar in-game, and an achievements system.

“I like how their marketplace is integrated directly into their user interface….Talking across games is fantastic. That definitely builds momentum for games and actually migrate users to other games and keeps you in touch with your gaming community.

“We’re working on an achievements system... I can’t say if it’s definitely tied to a gamerscore or something like Xbox does but that is an important feature.

“We’re continuing to build on this. We’re definitely going to have all of those features at some point. We know that they (consumers) want it and we’re building to get there… It’s not in the next firmware update but it’s something we’re working on."

Lempel also stated that the notion of a unified PS community hadn’t been forgotten and that efforts were being made to that effect.

“We’re definitely going towards this one unified community. PlayStation Network doesn’t mean PS3, it extends to the PSP, it will extend to the PSP (we think he meant PS2). That’s something you’ll see in the future. There’s a lot more coming.”

Last week Aaron Greenberg from Microsoft was in the Bonus Round chair fielding similar questions about the respective strengths and weaknesses of Xbox Live and PSN. Read his comments here.

Seems Sony is starting to think in order to give better services you need to charge for those services.

Xbox 360 "Elite"= $480
Wireless network adapter = $100
HD-DVD add on = 180

Pay $760 for a system, then pay for online...sure...why not. Past the point of reasonable.

why buy a wireless adapter and an hd-dvd drive?

At least there optional... plus.... you get better speed hooked up directly.

You include what comes in the box... not add on stuff. argue all you want, but 600 bucks for something that all it is is a blue ray player and not even a game console anymore is highway robbery.

Oh God, can people stop tacking on extra stuff to the 360? I have a Premium Xbox 360, which was $400. That's $400, not $760. The things you mentioned are completely optional. I don't want HD-DVD, and I sure as Hell don't want a wireless adapter, nor do I want an Elite.

But uh... yeah...

It is true that most people only buy a ps3 for blu-ray. When the sales reports came out for blu-ray they said that was the major reason of why blu-ray titles sold so much. Sony has lost out big time with their lack of quality titles and not having enough good exclusives. Microsoft had many great exclusives out at this time last year where Sony hasn't even given a decent titles like any of those.

I totally agree... and in all honesty... its only PS3 owners trying to justify paying 600 bucks for their system. I only payed 310 bucks for my Premium... much much cheaper than a 600 buck system. And the one thing that interested me WAS the fact EVERYTHING IS OPTIONAL. Shoot... the 360 could get a BR Drive! But it was made to be fully upgradeable... I love it.

So for anyone who keeps wanting to justify paying 600 bucks... compare it product to product out of the box. Dont start adding things to everything till it reaches the same amount. The Elite is for the die hards... reports... the HDMI doesnt add to much more to everything, but hey... wanna compare it? It has a 120 gig hdd... the PS3 60... both HDMI... Elite 480 bucks... the PS3 600 bucks.... hmmmm.....

Im done. Just dont like it when people try to justify paying for stuff...

watch yourself on the whole hard drive size thing. You can stick any size laptop hard drive in the ps3 and it will work so it can get pretty high.

I prefered Commodore over IBM,
ZX spectrum over C64,
C Amiga over Atari ST,
Amstrad over MSX,
Sega Genisis over Nintendo,
Sega Saturn over PS1,
Xbox over PS2,
360 over PS3.

Still having allmost all of that stuff lying around.......It's a question of taste, nothing more nothing less. ;)
