Ok guys,
This has been bothering me for a while and i finally got to the point that I'll bother you guys with trying to fix it. I got a replacement Xbox back in the late summer right, and this is a brand new PC, and the old xbox was never connected to it. I would think that maybe that could be part of the problem originally, but nope.
When i fire up the xbox, the icon thing pops up saying that it found the Windows media center extender aka xbox 360. If i click the thing, it pops up the wizard saying to input the code that the xbox gives me.
Here comes the problem: when i go to media center on the 360, it goes to where it searches for it, but it can NEVER find it no matter what i do. Ive added the ip address from the sysinfo to my firewall setup, but my thinking is that if the pc can find the xbox, the xbox should be able to find the xbox.
It wouldn't be that big of a deal as id only use it for the occasional videos or whatever, but those games for windows (if i ever decide to play one) the xbox has to be linked right? i dunno...
Any help would be appreciated though :D

So even if you use the media center button on the remote the pc isn't visible?
Please also check
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/911728/en-us
and
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/932164/en-us
these articles (certainly the second one) will certainly help you debug the matter.

Man ok just forget the media center thing go into windows media player i assume you have 11?
In synchronise press more options->media library-> configure sharing there you can select your xbox 360 to be an accepted device to stream content of your pc.
you can do everything watch movies, pics, stream music you dont need media center.
Its how i do it.

The following table contains the firewall ports that you must open to enable communication between an Xbox 360 console and a computer that is running Windows Media Connect. (ZUNE)
Note; You want to open ports on the firewall that runs on the computer, not the router firewall.
Note See the manufacturer’s documentation for your specific firewall if you need help opening the ports that are listed here.
goto: Conrol panel > Windows firewall > Exceptions > Add Port > enter Info below. Do for all. Should work, I use 'zune' for media sharing.
Port Name Protocol Scope
2869 UPnP Framework TCP My network (subnet) only
1900 UPnP Framework UDP My network (subnet) only
10284 Windows Media Connect UDP My network (subnet) only
10283 Windows Media Connect UDP My network (subnet) only
10282 Windows Media Connect UDP My network (subnet) only
10281 Windows Media Connect UDP My network (subnet) only
10280 Windows Media Connect UDP My network (subnet) only
10243 Windows Media Connect TCP My network (subnet) only
IT HELPS TO HAVE 'ZUNE MEDIA PLAYER' FOR THIS TO WORK PROPERLY.
Remember, You cannot use the media center feature, your media will be displayed under each topic ie; Music, video, ect.
Hope this helps. DS

yeah here's some of the things I've tried so far:
on one of the links that stony provided, Microsoft said to run some program and set some stuff to run, i did that and all of the applications that had media center in them, i made them run too.
then in my network and sharing center, i had to set my computer up to share with the xbox 360 (which it finds on the network easily any time i power it on). you would think that it would work if the computer can find the xbox right?
wrong.
on the Norton 360 thing, i created a rule using the ip address that the xbox lists as its ip saying to allow whatever connections, and to allow ALL ports to be used, not just the ones that are listed, thinking that its a xbox-pc connection issue, but that didnt work.
I searched on the Norton (symantec) knowledge base, and found some applications to add to the program allow list, but they're not all listed, and there is no way to manually add these other applications, that i know of.
this is weird, as when i added the original xbox to my other PC, i didn't have any where near this amount of issues.. oh well.. what are you going to do..
[plants c-4 charge in xbox 360 :D]

Again I tell you that you have to turn the firewall off in your router, and open up the ports in your router, it is the only way.

OK there lil guy, if i recall correctly, it was YOU that told me to go to some site and open up my ports on my router.. which fried the old one! "just follow the directions on the site...." good thing i had another router sitting around. so i don't see that move happening anytime soon. I was able to bridge my other PC to my xbox, so i don't know why it wouldn't work. The New PC can see the xbox, but the xbox cannot see the PC

other people on this site have gone to portforward.com and done the same thing and had no problems. I've never heard of a router frying because they opened up ports. It's the same as opening ports on a firewall, they are gonna be blocked on the router until you open them on it.

DMZ the 360 in the router. Then let the 360 connect to WMC (in that order) before you attempt a vice versa.
If you have a Linksys router, things are more difficult...... do you have one of those?
