Hollywood must be breathing a huge sigh of relief (I think I can hear the Disney and Fox execs from my office). The $20 billion DVD market needed a successor to the aging format, and now the fact that the Blu-ray format is the clear leader it's not just a huge win for SONY, but also a crucial win for the movie studios.

All of Hollywood needs a format to win, and fast. The longer the battle dragged on the harder it would be to transition that $20 billion home video market, and the more likely that that revenue stream dry up.

On the flip side, this is bad news for Microsoft and Toshiba, the two main proponents of the HD-DVD format. They were counting on the lower price of HD DVD players to tip things in their favor, figuring if they could sell players for $150 it wouldn't matter that Sony's PlayStation 3s, which cost hundreds more, had a Blu-ray player embedded, and that their format would win.

At this point I think there's no way for HD DVD to make a comeback. The question now becomes, how quickly will Universal and Paramount/DreamWorks start distributing in Blu-Ray?

This holiday shopping season was considered crucial in determining which format was more popular, and though I'd suspected that Warner Bros. was going to make this announcement, as recently as yesterday the PR department was saying they had no announcements in the works, so this was a last minute decision.

I'm interviewing Kevin Tsujihara, the head of Warner Bros. home entertainment division. In the years that I've known and interviewed him, he's always been considered a leader in the space, pioneering Warner Bros. digital distribution. Executives across the industry look to him for guidance on the future, and I'm dying to hear what he has to say!

Does this all really matter, when everything becomes digital downloads in a matter of years?

Yeah cause i sure hope we dont go there, there will allways be people who wanna touch what they buy.

And though the broadband market is pretty widespread these days but not yet everyone has acces to an internetconnection.

And what about a major game/movie release everyone has been waiting for say halo like anticipation or something like that and everyone is downloading it.

Would you wanna really wait untill the servers act normal again before you can download?

I know some think digital downloads are the future but there is alot of stuff not perfect about it.

I wanna stick to what we know and what we go to a store for and come out smiling cause its what we have been waiting for and cant wait to put it in our consoles.

Ofcourse i cant predict the future but digital downloads just arent for me.

well not games i mean, but movies it's already getting very popular with, though here in the states we still need to up our speeds. We are behind compared to other countries.

I think for a long, long time to come there will be room for a format like blu-ray even for movies.

In downloads like HD trailers from apple.com i allways seem to notice a little quality lost now those trailers they look great and play great on my computer.(and apple.com seems to allways have the best ones in the best quality)

But when i compare it to a movie playing on blu-ray it doesn't look as great when you start to really pay attention to things.

Im sure these downloads will be offered in the near future but im also sure i will still favor a format like blu-ray above a downloadservice.

I just don't understand why (outside of cruelty to their customers) they are forcing people to purchase two copies of a movie if they want to play it in both types of player.

You can play an HD-DVD in both a DVD and an HD-DVD player since one side of the disc is in standard format while the other side is the HD format.

Needless to say, this is a sad day for American consumers from both a purchasing standpoint and a selection standpoint.

I don't believe that there should be a format war, but I also believe in giving the consumer a choice based on research.

The reason Blu-ray is outselling HD-DVD is because five studios exclusively back Blu-ray while only two exclusively back HD-DVD. If you were playing a game of pick-up basketball, I'm pretty sure that 5 against 2 is pretty unfair.
