it picked up my gamertag just fine, but always reports me as offline. anyone have a guess as to why?

Its not showing up your games either. I'd say its your privacy settings;)

This is indeed most probably directly related to your privacy settings (either by yourself or because of age).

Check your account settings on xbox.com or on your console.
