http://www.n4g.com/M/8/News/38000/38720_hs.gif Heise Online, a German IT website, is reporting that during a press conference, representatives from Pioneer announced that Universal will break their exclusivity agreement with HD DVD (http://n4g.com/industrynews/News-38720.aspx#). This would allow Universal, the only large studio exclusively supporting HD DVD, to freely distribute their movies on Blu-ray. It is important to note that this announcement has not yet been confirmed by Universal.

It has long been speculated that Universal was receiving monetary compensation for being an exclusive HD DVD studio. This announcement would signal that they have decided to forgo the compensation in order to release titles on Blu-ray (http://n4g.com/industrynews/News-38720.aspx#). Most would agree that this move would effectively end the war, and no matter what side you support, a single HD format is the best long term solution.

For now this is rumor... but im going to quash alot of what this says...

Just because Universal went Universal doesnt mean they think BR is better. That just means they want more money, and think they can get more than the compensation. Does this decide a winner.... oh hell no. If that was the case.... all of the major studio's were on BR first, and still no winner.

As I said... this is in no way any clear indication of a winner, and this is all speculation. I personally think more studios should go universal. Thats just my opinion. I could slam into this more, but ill leave it at that and see if anyone else pops in to slam this one some more.

Sorry when I see rumors and the reasons THEY think there doing it... well... im gonna slam it down.

Also... just to note...

If Universal did like BR more and that was the reason to support it... why not drop HD-DVD? Like I said... money

well... i just found out that Badder Santa is being released on both. Why should antone care? Because Disney is part of it. I would not doubt by the end of the year... all of the companies will support both formats. Why? Because then they can find out a true winner.

Example... the 300 version coming out. Its coming out on DVD, HD-DVD, and BR. Which one is the one to get? Well... if you are looking for special features... the HD-DVD one is packed with almost twice as more than the BR, and to top it off... it comes with the DVD Version as well. The BR doesnt have much.

I dont think we will find a clear winner till at least the end of this year... if not by the middle of next. Just to throw another wrench... the 2 biggest blockbuster movies this year... both should go on BR.

I 'googled' a little and found lots of 'Sony representatives' [sic] declaring that they would be willing to support hd-dvd as well. :p

We'll see what really happens as time goes by, I don't believe this rumour for one bit!
