No more patience-testing shadow sitting in Splinter Cell Conviction

The big change in Splinter Cell Conviction's gameplay is the dropping of the series' trademark 'light and shadow' gameplay. That's right, no more crouching in shadows and watching your lightness bar. It's being replaced with 'active stealth,' or 'improvisation' according to the game's senior producer, Mathieu Ferland.

So what does that mean? Well, whereas in previous Splinter Cell games the main skill being tested was the player's patience (you sit in shadow, certain you're invisible and wait for your moment to leave cover), the new gameplay will be much more immediate.

According to Ferland, strategy will still play an important part, but now more focus will be placed on adaptation. "We want the player acting in a reactive mode, not a proactive one," he said. There are many ways to go unnoticed, and we are offering a wide variety of them, now, we are pushing you to choose one, and if it was the wrong choice or was badly executed, other means to improvise.

"A real survivor does not only survive the initial threat, but to the ones yet unseen," he beams. It all sounds very much like Metal Gear Solid 4's tagline of 'No place to hide' to us, although a change in gameplay would be a refreshing break from the now standard sneaking fare.

Your thougts? Did you like sneaking around in the dark?

I am really looking forward to this game. There wasan article in Game Informer and Imust say the graphics look good and the story line will be good.

At first lurking in the dark ticked me off then I started to like the tension. I may end up missing that. Too early to tell. Ubi pulls of great games.

I agree, In some parts of the game I LOVED just waiting for the guy to walk up so you kill them. Other times it just took WAY to long, and I would actually end up getting mad.lol. We will see how this works out exactly though, this is def. on my "to buy" list. :)

I love the Splinter Cell series, especially Co-Op multiplayer. It requires teamwork which helps making friends too. Nice to see they're trying new things, because I was actually starting to favor the Hitman series when it came to single player.

Hopefully they could make this work well. Most stuff they have changed in the seris has been welcomed by the hardcore fans of splinter cell. I have confidence in them to pull off this change and make it work well. I just don't want them fooling around with the core gameplay style too much, because when they did that with Rainbow it was a disaster. From what I've seen of it so far I think it will be a pretty well done game.

It seems like ubi soft is just ripping off Kojima again. Now don't get me wrong I liked fisher better then snake but ubi soft could at least try and be creative.

Developers are in a tough position. If they change a game too much, fans get angry (Rainbow Six Lockdown) not enough and they are thought of as lazy or milking it. Either way some SC fans will be annoyed one way or the other. Ubi must be hoping the majority will like the change or at least grow to like it.
